Most retail outdoor furniture is made from wood, metal or plastic. Each material has advantages and disadvantages. Of the three materials, plastic polyresin affords the most benefit in terms of maintenance.
Since the introduction of outdoor furniture, wood has been the most widely material. It is thought that furniture specifically designed for outdoor use has roots the now-famous Adirondack chair. Dating back to the turn of the Twentieth Century, the Adirondack chair became a very successful example of outdoor furniture. The Westport, Muskoka and cottage chairs are thought to be a replication of the original Adirondack chair though no one person has come forward to take credit.
Wood was plentiful and relatively inexpensive during most of the 1900’s and was used to manufacture most outdoor furniture. Many of us are old enough remember when all outdoor and beach furniture was made from wood. Folding beach and lawn chairs were often constructed using a combination of wood and canvas fabric.
The manufacture of wood outdoor furniture requires the use of durable, and expensive, hardwoods. Oaks, hemlocks, teak, mahogany and other hardwoods are still used today. Though less expensive than hardwoods, soft woods such as pine, are rarely used unless the wood has been treated to withstand exposure to moisture and ultraviolet rays. Regardless of the wood species, wood patio furniture can require a great deal of maintenance. Paint, stains or other protective finishes must be applied to keep out moisture.
Metal is another material that is frequently used in the manufacture of patio furniture. Long lasting and durable, metal patio furniture has seen its own evolution. Arguably the most popular king of metal patio furniture is made from wrought iron. The mid 1900’s saw the introduction of patio furniture made of tubular aluminum. Light weight and inexpensive, aluminum patio furniture has gradually fallen out of favor.
Like wood patio furniture, metal requires a good bit of maintenance. Since is prone to corrosion, iron and steel patio furniture needs to be painted. To make metal patio furniture appropriately comfortable, the seating surfaces also require the addition of upholstered pads.
